Kevin Anderson and Roger Federer meet in the quarterfinal of the 2019 tennis Miami Open.
Kevin Anderson is coming off a straight sets win over Jordan Thompson that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 73 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Anderson won 70 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his seven break points. Anderson has won six of his seven sets this tournament and isn’t playing like somebody who entered this event with no matches since the Australian Open. Anderson looks confident, is going for his spots and has bombed a combined 38 aces through three matches. Anderson hopes to make the semifinals of a Masters 1000 for the third time in his career, the first at the Miami Open. Anderson has 17 career wins over top-10 players, five of which came last year. Anderson has won eight of his last 10 matches on outdoor hard court.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Daniil Medvedev that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 85 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Federer won 77 percent of his total service points and converted on all three of his break points. Federer is coming off his most impressive performance of the tournament and wasn’t broken once. While shaky at times throughout the tournament, beating a top-15 player in just an hours work has to give Federer a new boost of confidence that he probably didn’t have a few days ago. Federer hopes to make the semifinals of a Masters 1000 for the 10th time in his last 11 appearances. A win here also gives Federer his seventh career semifinal trip at the Miami Open. Federer has won 16 of his last 18 matches on outdoor hard court.
These two have played six times and Federer has won five of those matches, including the most recent meeting last year in London. Anderson’s only win over Federer came in the 2018 Wimbledon. Federer is 4-0 against Anderson on hard court and has won all of those matches in straight sets. Five of the six matches overall have been decided in straight sets, and Federer’s one loss went five sets and lasted over four hours.
Anderson is always a live underdog given his serving ability, but it seems like many of the top players have figured him out and are always able to take advantage of that one little opening. Just one drop in level and Anderson loses, and it’s been no different against Federer in their six meetings. Sure, the rest advantage does play a part, but Federer had a pretty routine match yesterday, so I’m not concerned much.
Look for Federer to grind out Anderson and win this match in two competitive sets.
