Here is my preview for stage 1 of the 104th Tour de France. This will be my favourite stage to preview of the whole Tour. It´s of course not because of the route, but as some of you might know I´ll be live there and I´m already excited. I´m sorry that this preview will probably be the most detailed of the whole Tour, but the start in Germany means a lot to me. The last time the Tour started in Germany was 1987, when the start was in Berlin. But if you look for a stage start or finish, it was 2005 when Germany had it last time. However I was 7 years old there and that shows that it was a long time ago (atleast for me ;)). I´m hoping for a German stage win here and with this a German in yellow and a German in white, but we´ll see. We´ll start in Stockum, riding next to the Rhein and cross it at the Oberkasseler Brücke. Short after it, the Rheinkniebrücke will be crossed and we´re heading to the Königsallee, where the intermediate checkpoint is placed. Now two turns left and one right and then straight back to Stockum. With 8-9km straight road, this is an ITT for the men with power.
The one and only checkpoint is at the probably most famous street in Düsseldorf, the “Kö” Königsallee). If you´re coming with your wife here, better avoid this street, as she will set your credit card on fire and I also don´t know if the chairs there are comfortable 😉 It´s also called fashion street of Düsseldorf, so you basically understand what I mean.
A German podium? Well maybe in my dreams, but we´re having atleast some contenders. Martin is even though his form is not the best one of the favorites, but also Sütterlin can do the job. I´ve backed him a week ago at 150/1, now he´s as low as 18/1. Kittel could do well here too but can´t see him winning. Same goes to Politt and Arndt. I think Quickstep haven´t published their team already, but if Schachmann would go, he will do well too. I´m sure we´ll see someone who speaks German in white at the end of the day, but not sure if he´ll be from Germany or Switzerland.
For the stage win, I´ve had two picks.
First one and the main is Jos van Emden. This ITT is perfect for someone like him. He´s not a fan of climbs but he doesn´t need to fear any on this course. The course can be compared to the last stage of this years Tirreno-Adriatico. He was second there behind Rohan Dennis and Dennis won´t start here. I wouldn´t be surprised if van Emden will take yellow here. As he won the last stage of the Giro this year, he would basically win two GT stages in a row.
My outside pick, which is now not a big outsider anymore is Jasha Sütterlin. Even though he´s coming from Freiburg, which is not near Düsseldorf, he will have the support of the crowd and the motivation for the white jersey. His ride in the German ITT championship was strong with only 15 seconds down to Martin, but the course was different/longer. However if he has a good day, he has a chance. Pity that at this time only win was offered and not Top 3, but I still like that bet. I´ve added a 7/1 for Top 3 and this is still good for him.
However, my prediction for Top 3 is:
- Martin
- Van Emden
- Roglic
Martin still has the home advantage which should help him and he is World Champion for a reason. However the odds were I think 7/4 for Martin and 5/1 for Van Emden when I´ve placed my bet and even though I´m hoping for a German win, I think the 5/1 on van Emden has better value. Roglic was strong in ITTs this year too so he will fill up the podium for me.
Tour De France 2014 Stage 1
I´m not sure now where I´ll stand while the race is going, but might go to the start before it begins. Maybe a few riders are having time for a picture, but not sure how it goes. I´m hoping everything will stay safe and no incidents happen. If you want to meet me there on Saturday, just tell me you´re there, if you haven´t already! 🙂
